The United Kingdom has a rich history of brewing, with quite distinct traditions. Historically, bitters, porters, stouts and milds have been the main styles brewed, rather than lagers or pilsners. In addition, cask conditioned beer is still common, with the beer finishing its maturing in casks in the cellar of the pub rather than at the brewery.

Most European beers were originally brewed in monasteries by monks devoted to their tasks. As such, the reverence of the ale is taken very seriously. Belgian breweries often have glasses unique to each beer. European beers tend to be light, quaffable ales.

Beer is a major part of German culture and is brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot, which only permits water, hops and malt as ingredients. It also stipulates that beers not exclusively using barley-malt, such as wheat beer, must be top-fermented.

The most common style of beer produced by the big breweries is American lager, a form of pale lager; small breweries, most of which were founded since the 19802 produce a range of styles. Mexican beer is distinctive for its lager-like properties, light-bodied and mild in taste.

Brewed in Asia for over 7,000 years, but it's only recently that Asia has overtaken Europe and the Americas to become the biggest beer-drinking continent. These typically clear, crisp, light pilsners are ideal to drink with spicy foods.
